Cassava starch processing line



In the world , many cassava starch processing facilities still with traditional process. The traditional process, usually practiced in the small-scale factories, is able to separate starch from fresh cassava roots by crushing and then submerging the cassava under the water. The starch made through this process is inferior in quality. The cassava starch processing process of this method has 9 steps as follows

1.Weigh fresh cassava roots to determine starch percentage.

2.Chop out the tails connected along with the roots before putting in the peeling devices.

3.Remove the peel and steep them in the cleansing well.

4.Put the clean ones in the chopper and grinder. Grind until they becomes fine particles and sediment them in the water. In this step, they appear as the slurry mix of starch, water, and fiber.

5.Filter the slurry to separate starch slurry from the fiber, however, the fiber still has some starch content that can be used as animal food.

6.Sediment the slurry in the wooden pail.

7.Dry the wet cake under the sun light on the yard.

8.Use the grindstone to grind the completely dried cake.

9.Pack in the bag.

Cassava starch hydro cyclone



 
The multi-stage hydro cyclone unit whose primary purpose is the removal of soluble and insoluble protein, fine fiber, the end of the purification of sugar starch milk, is starch concentrated, washing, and refining key equipment of starch processing.

Automatic cassava starch production plant





Cassava Starch is produced by wet-milling of fresh . Starch is the main constituent of cassava.

Our company is professional manufacture the automatic cassava starch production plant . The whole automatic cassava starch production plant is comprised of 12 units as below: 

1. Cassava receiving unit

Material receiving unit is the first link of cassava starch processing. The primary purpose of  this unit is the cassava preliminary removing impurity and the smooth storing in inside of raw material storage tank.

2. Cassava conveying and cleaning unit 

Cassava stored in the cassava hopper is conveyed to the large inclination-angle belt conveyor through conveying belt at the bottom of the hopper, and further is conveyed  into cleaner to remove impurities mixed in the materials at harvest time. 

3. Cassava washing and crushing unit 
   
After the cassava washed by cassava washer, then fall into the crusher through the belt conveyor to carry on the preliminary slicing of cassava tuber. 
Cassava is cut into small piece to ensure rasping efficiency of rasper. Cubage of raw material temporary storage bin generally is designed to store washing quantity for one to two hours. 

4. Rasping and pumping unit 

Rasping unit is the most important link to influence cassava starch extraction rate. Efficient rasper can release cassava starch particles from cassava cells thoroughly, guaranteeing the combination starch content of cassava residue to the minimum.

5. Centrifugal extraction unit 

Centrifugal extraction unit is another key units of the whole production line to influence cassava starch extraction rate, good centrifugal screen and process technology can help extract out all the free starch from broken cassava cells. 

6. Fine fiber separation unit

Fine fiber separation unit purpose is to reduce working pressure of hydro-cyclone. 

7. De-sanding unit 

Cassava slurry after fine fiber separation process is pumped into the de-sand cyclone through pump. De-sanding machine with vortex tube of special manufacture is durable; the air valve with unique design can discharge sand automatic periodically.
   
8. Concentrating and refining unit 

Concentrating and refining unit is the most important one of the whole production line, starch quality can be guaranteed fully in hydro-cyclone refining unit. Impurities of starch slurry will be eliminated thoroughly through physical method, without influencing the quality of starch product.
      
9. Starch de-watering unit

Starch milk with too big moisture content came from hydro-cyclone can’t directly dry, so first starch milk needs de-water to make starch moisture content be about 40%.      

10.Air drying unit 

Air dryer will further dry the de-watered starch to commodities starch required moisture content. Our company flash dryer by special design practically proves that the energy consumption reduces 30-40% than average.

11. Screening and storage unit

Starch is conveyed to the starch well-distribution bunker by finished product spiral, and then the starch is conveyed to the bucket elevator through the leveraged feeder starch below the starch well-distribution bunker, 

12. Weighting and packing unit 

The starch of storehouse will be packed into 25 kg per bag by automatic packer.

Why is cassava an important food crop for Africa?

Cassava is highly adaptable to the African tropical climate and soils, and remains very popular for producing excellent harvests even when other crops fail. It is also the most widely available source of carbohydrates and dietary energy in Africa.

Processed forms of cassava, especially gari (or garri), fufu and tapioca, are very common throughout West Africa. Gari is hugely popular in the region as it has traditionally remained cheaper than other carbohydrate sources, especially rice and maize.

Gari (also Garri or tapioca) is the most widely traded processed cassava product. It is estimated that more than 75 percent of the cassava produced in Africa is processed into gari.

As a result, gari prices are often a reliable indication of the demand and supply of cassava.

However, the price of cassava and its derivatives have increased sharply in the past few years. The population explosion in Africa has made it difficult to produce enough cassava to feed many ‘common’ Africans.

In addition, the raging economic growth of China has made it the largest buyer of African cassava, which it uses as a major ingredient for animal feed for livestock (cattle, pigs etc.).  China is currently responsible for more than 60 percent of global cassava consumption, and is still buying more from Africa (especially Nigeria)!

Combine the growing profile and demand for cassava as a source of biofuels and it becomes very evident that the future demand and prices for cassava is headed for the skies.

The estimated value of the global cassava trade is in excess of US$2 billion annually. However, Thailand, Brazil and Indonesia dominate the international trade in cassava.

What’s the difference between cassava starch & cassava flour ?


Cassava starch   

Some people will tell you that  Cassava Starch & Cassava Flour are the same thing. But they are not.

Cassava starch is a starch extracted from the cassava roots through wet process.The final product cassava starch is white powder similar as potato starch or corn starch .

Cassava flour also is powder-like form white product , but it is different with cassava starch. The cassava flour is made from all the cassava root and retain the nutrients of cassava . Compare with cassava starch , cassava flour has more comprehensive nutrition.

Cassava starch is relatively free from fibre. It is obtained by wet extraction from tubers , while flour is obtained by direct drying of the tuber pieces and pulverising  Typically starch contains 98% starch and less than 0.5% fibre while it is around 75% starch and 1-3% fibre in the flour.
